This is always a dilemma.
When I first got to UAE, it was a norm to see most of my friends/colleagues tip the workers here. Be it to the waiter or waitress or bell boys or supermarket packers etc., it was like a mandatory thing to do.
Back home in Malaysia, tipping is almost hardly noticeable. Even sometimes when I want to leave tips, I will have at least one family member or one friend who will say, "Why leave tips? They have already charge us service tax."
Well, I guess they do have a point there. I don't know. Any of you have this dilemma? Ok, maybe it is not really a dilemma, more like a tricky situation. Like, sometimes I want to give just because of the unexpected good service. Sometimes I want to give, because the change is really minute. I mean honestly, if the change was "RM 0.60." Sixty freaking cents and that also you want to kira. In my opinion, quite absurd lah.
But there are times where I feel like, why should I give. For example, the packer boy at the supermarket cashier. It is their job to pack for us. They were employed to pack for us. So, why tip them? Sometimes when there is a lane without the packer, it will be the cashier who will pack for us. And this person, we don't tip them ever.
It is just a WEIRD situation!
And the other while driving home, Boo and I had this conversation about the packers. And seriously, they can earn quite a lot if say 50% of the people tip them.
So, we bought grocery that came up to about AED 300. And I gave the guy tip of AED 5.
Let's do some mathematics here:
Total customers that lane, that day: 100
50% of customers will give tips: 50
Each customer, on average gives: AED 5
Let's say he works 20 days a month: 20
So for that day, he will make: 50 x 5 x 20 = AED 5000
For a packer boy, he can make AED 5000 a month! That is not including his basic salary. Could be, to say the least, AED 1000 a month. So that means, he can make at least AED 6000 a month. That is quite high for a person who is just packing grocery.
Application to be a packer person, anyone?
